Belmont, meaning “beautiful mountain” in French, is a peninsula community halfway between San Francisco and San Jose. Situated primarily on the hills overlooking San Francisco Bay and the coastal range, the area is abundant in trees, vast canyons and gorgeous wooded hillsides. Homes are nestled throughout, reflecting a solid residential base.
Belmont residents have a wealth of recreational activities available at the many facilities, parks and trails spread throughout the city. The Parks & Recreation Department offers a wide variety of programs for all age groups, from preschool to seniors, providing ample opportunities for community connection, outdoor fun and lunchtime leisure. The Department also offers several excellent facilities for parties, weddings, receptions and business meetings.
5 elementary plus one approved for construction, 1 middle school, 2 high schools, 11 preschool/kindergartens and Notre Dame de Namur University. In addition the community is served by Canada College and College of San Mateo.
With a name like Belmont, meaning “beautiful mountain,” and a location that straddled the El Camino Real, and the original canyon road to the coast, how could a city not fail to prosper?
Belmont citizens are justifiably proud of their new “State of the Art” Library that opened its doors in 2006. It was a collaborative effort of the City of Belmont, the Friends of the Library and the community of Belmont.
Retail and service businesses form the main economy of Belmont, but there is also some light industry. Shopping areas include the central business/civic district with many retail and service shops and restaurants.
